Tournament 3 Results

As most of you know, there were many organizational problems at this weekend's tournament. We don't have any JV results so far, but here are the Varsity results:

1) Jamar Garrett and Stephen Mack were the top seed team going into the elimination rounds. They advanced to quarters, won their round, advanced to semis, and finished the tournament w/ a semi-finalist trophy.

2) Kendall Mason and Brandon Paschal broke into quarters, won their round, advanced to semis, and lost their semi-final round in a split decision. They also received a semi-finalist trophy.

3) Jamar Garrett won the 2nd place Varsity speaker award.

4) Stephen Mack won the 3rd place Varsity speaker award.

5) In addition to competing in the regular A Conference tournament, Jamar Garrett and Stephen Mack also competed in the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Debates hosted by Motorola, who is now one of the sponsors of the Chicago Debate League. This style of debate is much different from policy debate. It is like a combination of Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debate. Out of the 8 teams that competed from various schools from all 3 conferences, Jamar and Steve placed 2nd overall and competed at the final round against Whitney Young H.S. on Saturday. In a very competitive and outstanding round, Whitney Young won on a split decision. However, Steve and Jamar won $500 each and a finalist plaque!! This was a huge accomplishment, and the level of debate was extremely high.

This was definitely our most successful tournament thus far for the 2008-2009 school year! I see King continuing along this trend as the season continues after Christmas break!! I will post more news as soon as I have the rest of the tournament results by the middle of this week.

Congratulations to all of our debaters who competed this weekend. I saw great things in all of you!! The King students who competed this weekend were Jamar Garrett, Stephen Mack, Kendall Mason, Brandon Paschal, Clarissa McWoodson, Jawanza Wright, LaDonna Miller, Tamir Williams, Isaac Mack, and Armani Thomas.

Three of these debaters were competing for the very first time and did an amazing job!! I couldn't be prouder! Those 3 debaters were Jawanza Wright, Isaac Mack, and Armani Thomas.
