Throughout the school year, the Chicago Debate League offers FREE students seminars for ALL high school debaters in the city. I highly recommend this Saturday's student debate seminar to be held at Roosevelt University downtown from 9am-noon. This is the perfect opportunity for those of you who need help understanding the core files better and for those who haven't been able to make it to practice lately. This will catch you up on most of the key basics, plus it will give you the essential tools to prepare yourself better for the next tournament. This Saturday's seminar is NOT mandatory, but those of you who do show up will receive 6 service learning hours from me.
Here's the info:
Roosevelt University is located at 430 S. Michigan Ave., on the Northwest corner of Michigan and Congress. There will be information when you walk in to tell you which room to go to. The seminar will go from 9 am - noon and will be led by David Song, who is also running all of our A Conference tournaments. David is the Assistant Director of the Chicago Debate Commission.
Transportation? If you have a parent who is willing to drive you on Saturday, that would be great! If not, please e-mail me at worldperc1@hotmail.com no later than tomorrow night at 10 pm. I'll personally offer to drive some debaters who can get to King on Saturday morning but have no transportation downtown.
For those who attended tournament 1: David will help you figure out how to win debates you lost or win debates you won more convincingly, and w/ better speaker points. What were you confused about at tournament 1? You'll get to go over those arguments.
These trainings are a chance for you get your questions answered, your frustrations resolved, and to learn about debate so you can succeed and grow. This Saturday's agenda will be:
I. Introductions
II. Policy Debate -- This Is How We Do It
A. Structure
B. Flowing
C. Clash -- What Is A Good Argument?
D. Evidence
III. 2008 - 2009 National Debate Topic: Alternative Energy Incentives
IV. Introducing and Using the Core Files (bring your core files if you can)
V. Questions About Debate Technique/Theory/Strategy, Alternative Energy, and Other Matters of the World
VI. Small Group Work on Topic Arguments/In-Round Clash/Flowing-Judging
VII. Volunteers To Debate/Demonstrate Clash on the Topic
I hope some of you can make it there this Saturday. E-mail me.
