Yesterday the KCP Debate Team competed at the first tournament of the season. This is a rebuilding year for the team, and I am both nervous and excited at the same time. I have 22 debaters on the team this year. We had 14 kids scheduled to compete at tournament 1. Three debaters didn't show up on Saturday, so my 2nd Varsity team wound up as a maverick.
Then lunch turned out to be an Oliver Twist story. Each student was only allowed to take 3 chicken nuggets, a bag of chips, and either 3 paper thin cookies or 3 tiny pieces of candy. How are hungry teenagers supposed to satisfy their appetites on that?? Last year at the Hope tournament, we had huge pieces of bbq chicken, corn, and potatoes. There was so much leftover chicken that everyone was going back for 2nds and 3rds. I hope the food situation gets better this year. Lunch was a disaster yesterday.
At the awards assembly I had no idea what to expect. Although we didn't win as many awards as King won last year at this time, I was still very happy Kendall Mason received the 1st place JV speaker award, both Kendall and his partner Jade Heard won the 3rd place JV team award w/ a perfect 3-0 record, and Jamar Garrett won the 6th place Varsity speaker award. Jamar and his partner Stephen Mack finished as the 12th place Varsity team w/ a 2-1 record. Also finishing w/ a 2-1 record were JV debaters Tamir Williams and LaDonna Miller.
We still have so much work ahead, but I think hard work always pays off! I feel we have many promising debaters on the team, and I see great things ahead. Now that 12 new KCP debaters have competed in a tournament and have gotten a taste of what debate is all about, I feel their enthusiasm will rub off on the rest of the newbies.
After the tournament the bus took as back to King, but not before our bus was stopped by the cops in Garfield Park. LOL! The cop claimed she had to go 50 mph to catch up to our bus. Funny, I don't remember our driver ever going 50 mph. She has been our driver for 4 years now, and I'm happy to be working w/ such a reliable driver for our team. It makes things so much easier.
Next the KCP debate team will be ordering team hoodies and will be working very hard to prepare for tournament 2. We are always in need of judges, so please spread the word. We also provide monthly judge training seminars for any interested parents or King faculty who may be interested in supporting our team. I am looking forward to meeting more parents as the semester progresses.
Sincerely,
Fonda Ginsburg
